The only problem out of the box was the nasty old oil smell on the jars. That was easy fixed with some soap and water. The lights are nice and bright. The lids have keep water out even with all the rainfall we have had.

Some of the jars have started filling with rain water. Lights still work but this will lead to rusting in battery comportment eventually. See more In the past, I had metal screw tops with an otherwise similar design. Those did not make it through the year--some did not make it past the summer. This solar LED mason jar light set lasted all four seasons without bringing them inside (though the winter was mild, it was not exactly dry). I just bought another set for other areas of the yard.

The metal style I had previously rusted, and I like weathered looks, but out of the six I had, only one is left. All six of this plastic top model is still working.

Two things: First, it does take in water (no more than an inch in any of them). It never interfered with functioning, and added some interesting light casts as a result. I didn''t mind the water, and it is easy enough to unscrew the top, and dump it out. And most of the units are placed in an area where they only receive direct sunlight in the morning--the sun disappears over the roofline around noon. Still, these illuminated well into the early hours of the morning, and I''ve seen the lights glow until 3am.

UPDATE: Of the 18 I have up, 12 are still working and made it through their second winter outside (South Eastern Mass.). I just ordered another batch to replace the 6 I lost over the winter.
